Welcome to the San Diego Section of ARES!
The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes. It is sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) in the United States and Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC). The San Diego / Southwestern Section provides services to the San Diego and Imperial Counties of California.
Every licensed amateur, regardless of membership in ARRL or any other local or national organization, is eligible to apply for membership in ARES. Training may be required or desired to participate fully in ARES. Please inquire at the local level for specific informaton. Because ARES is an Amateur Radio service, only licened radio amateurs are eligible for membership. The possession of emergency-powered equipment is desirable, but is not a requirement for membership. Emergency Coordinators do need to be a member of ARRL.
The primary function of SDGARES is to provide Emergency Communications for:
- Declared Emergencies
- Public Safety Incidents
- Served Agency Mutual Assistance (ARC, EMS, CDF, CERT, Beach Rescue)
- Public Safety Mutual Assistance (Miramar Air Show, Special Olympics)
- Public Safety Drills
San Diego ARES meets the 2nd Saturday of each month at Scripps Memorial Hospital, Schaetzel Building, Nobel Room at 8:00AM - 9890 Genesee Ave, La Jolla, CA 92037. Get directions here. The parking lot most ARES members and visitors use is now CLOSED (and if you've been on this campus before, you'll also notice many buildings "missing". There is an adjacent lot that is at the street level but our understanding is that is specifically for patients and doctors. This means that we will now be using the underground parking under the hospital itself, as well as the multilevel parking garage by the Ximed building (this is the parking structure to the left as you as facing the main hospital itself), also on the same campus. Parking remains free (normally 4.00 and higher) but you will want to do what needs to be done for vehicles that have antennas on them that may not be garage friendly.
We also have a Yahoo!Group with a mail reflector. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SDGARES/join to request membership.
